The MEGA Tetrahedron Event in the Light, Leeds

About the Regional Education Team

In 1998 ICE Y&H began its schools initiative to promote Civil Engineering to society with a team of around a dozen members, largely from the Graduates and Students Committee. The Regional Education Team has now grown to contain over 100 ICE Ambassadors, willing volunteers from all sectors of the Civil Engineering profession, working to promote Civil Engineering throughout the education system.

Contstructing the Giant Tetrahedron with a Cub Scout Group

Through our working partnerships with STEMNET and ConstructionSkills we have been able to attend well in excess of 100 events each year recently, and with our collaborative partnership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and Institution of Structural Engineers we hope to be able to improve dramatically on these figures to reach even more of the over 4000 schools in our region.

As our activities expand and more projects are developed, we continually need the support of our members. Involvement in this initiative will be part of a member’s Continuing Professional Development and may also contribute to fulfilling parts of the Development Objectives.

Further information about our activities and the ICE Ambassadors scheme is available on this website, or by contacting one of our Education Coordinators using the details below.

 Educational Activities

The Regional Education Team works with schools, colleges and universities, and we:

• deliver practical educational activities,
• attend careers fairs,
• deliver careers presentations,
• give presentations to specific audiences,
• and support events in universities.

In schools, we aim to deliver highly exciting and educational activities based on the themes of Civil Engineering. These are designed to cater for all Key Stages and are tailored specifically to incorporate many different areas of the National Curriculum. All of the activities have been very well received by the schools over the years and we have now begun plans to develop additional activities that reflect even more disciplines from the Civil Engineering profession.

The Resources section provides a full list of the activities we offer and the intended audiences. For our more popular activities, Activity Plans are available and give outline details of our activities, such as learning outcomes, length of the activity, ideal audience size, required resources and who these will be supplied by and a précis of how the event will work.

A Secondary School competition to recreate the Wembley Stadium Arch in the Light, Leeds

The picture above is of the Wembley Stadium Arch Activity carried out by students from Benton Park Technology College. This took place at the Light in Leeds on Friday 7 March 2008 during the ICE President's visit. Here is some of the very positive feedback the students gave:

"We enjoyed working together as a team, helping each other succeed and getting everyone involved"

"We would liked the day to have been longer and let the arch stay up so more people could see our work"

"The day taught us how to work in teams and solve problems - which will help us with maths"

Overall, the students rated the activity a very impressive 4.7 out of 5 - most gave a score of 5 out of 5!

More comments from Schools

Thank you so much for giving so generously of your time to come into Eastburn Junior & Infant School as an Ambassador for the ICE (to deliver the Lego Towers Activity). The children thoroughly enjoyed your visit and it was a very worthwhile project both from an educational and a personal development point of view. The school has donated to Wateraid as a result of your visit so there has been benefit all round. We hope to do futher projects with the ICE in the future and so it is possible that we might see you again sometime .

A huge thankyou from everyone at Priory Lane Junior School for a great afternoon of fun and learning, building the MEGA Tetrahedron in Church Square (Scunthorpe).  All of our (Year 6) children were buzzing on the way back to school and can't wait to show others in school what they learnt.  We really appreicate the time Ambassadors give up to help out in schools with events such as this and the other workshops.

ICE Ambassadors

Activities are delivered by ICE Ambassadors, volunteers from all sectors of the profession.

The work of the RET would not be possible without the support of our Ambassadors. Each year certificates are awarded to the Ambassadors that have engaged in activities during the year. An extra Certificate of Merit is also awarded to those Ambassadors whose level of participation has been exemplary.

The Ambassadors section contains resources for potential and existing Ambassadors.
