The Regional Education Team
In 1998 ICE Y&H began its schools initiative to promote Civil Engineering to Society. Then, we were a team of around a dozen members, largely from the Graduates and Students Committee, but we have since grown in number to form a Regional Education Team of over 100 willing volunteers from all sectors of the Civil Engineering profession.
We aim to deliver highly exciting and educational activities, all of which are based on the themes of Civil Engineering. These are designed to cater for all school Key Stages and are tailored specifically to incorporate many different areas of the National Curriculum. All of the activities have been very well received by the schools over the years and we have now begun plans to develop additional activities that reflect even more disciplines from the Civil Engineering profession.
Besides the work of the Regional Education Team in schools, ICE Y&H also promotes Civil Engineering in other ways. So, if working in schools does not appeal to you, perhaps the other activities we engage in may interest you? Members of the Regional Education Team also:
• Attend Careers Fairs;
• Give presentations to specific audiences;
• and help out at events in Universities.
Other ways to Promote Civil Engineering
If your interest lies more in working behind the scenes you could always consider joining one of the many Regional Committees, the Branch or Specialist Interest Groups. Together these committees are responsible for organising:
• Evening meetings
• Site visits
• Seminars
• Awards
• Competitions; and
• much more.

The Education Site explained
Whatever your reason for visiting this area of the Website, the Menu Bar at the left hand side of this introductory page has been designed to take you to areas containing much more information. These areas will give you much more insight into what the Regional Education Team can do to promote Civil Engineering.
• Resources Page will take you to a comprehensive list of the activities we can deliver and the intended audiences. Whether a student, teacher, current or potential Ambassador or just a casual browser, you will be able to view and download a range of Activity Plans. These have been compiled to give outline details of our activities, such as Learning Outcomes, length of the activity, ideal audience size, required resources and who these will be supplied by and a précis of how the event will work. If one or more of these is of particular interest to you, why not contact us? Our details are listed on the Contact Page which you will also find on the Menu Bar.
• Ambassadors Page has been developed to cater for our Ambassadors, containing additional information for their work in schools. This page includes detailed Activity Briefing Notes, a range of Activity Downloads, Expenses Form and much more. To access this area, you will require a password: this is your MyICE password. If you wish to download material from this area, you will have to register with MyICE first. If you experience any particular difficulty, please Contact Us.
• Contact Information will provide you with details of key representatives that should be able to assist you with any enquiries you may have.

The picture above is of the Wembley Stadium Arch Activity carried out by students from Benton Park Technology College. This took place at the Light in Leeds on Friday 7 March during the President's visit. Here is some of the very positive feedback the students gave:
"We enjoyed working together as a team, helping each other succeed and getting everyone involved"
"We would liked the day to have been longer and let the arch stay up so more people could see our work"
"The day taught us how to work in teams and solve problems - which will help us with maths"
Overall, the students rated the activity a very impressive 4.7 out of 5 - most gave a score of 5 out of 5!
The Future?
Through our working partnerships with STEMNET, SETPOINT and ConstructionSkills we have been able to attend well in excess of 100 events in every recent year, and with our collaborative partnership with IMechE and IStructE we hope to be able to improve dramatically on these figures: 100 is a very small number when you consider the actual figure of over 4000 schools that are in our region.

However none of these events or initiatives could have taken place without the uncompromising support of our Ambassadors who willingly give up their time during working hours, in the evenings and even at weekends to assist. And of course, it is their employers who allow them this time. We give a special thanks to those organisations and give them the recognition they deserve for allowing their employees the time to assist in this crucial initiative. A list of these organisations appears below. Is your organisation one of those listed as allowing employees to participate?
As the numbers in our Regional Education Team increase and more projects are developed in the next year, we will need the support of our members. If you are interested in becoming involved with our work in schools or would like more information please Contact Us. Involvement in this initiative will be part of a member’s Continuing Professional Development and may also contribute to fulfilling parts of the Development Objectives.
Recognising the support from Ambassadors and their employers
Each year certificates are awarded to the Ambassadors that have engaged in activities during the year. An extra Certificate of Merit is also awarded to those Ambassadors whose level of participation has been exemplary. Ambassadors’ employers are recognised in many ways, at the foot of letters, on all emails in respect of promotional activities and on an assortment of posters etc. as well as on this website. Without the support of these organisations, the work of the Ambassadors simply would not be possible. Awards of Gold, Silver and Bronze Certificates are therefore made each year to those organisations that have allowed the highest levels of attendance in schools etc. Many of these now adorn the walls of receptions and board rooms around the region and are becoming quite sought after!
